What you need to know about SCA for Ecommerce and Client Billing

<p>Webflow checkout is now fully compliant with a new regulation known as <a target="_blank" href="<https://stripe.com/guides/strong-customer-authentication>" data-rt-link-type="external">Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)</a> which is taking effect in the European Economic Area (<a target="_blank" href="<https://www.efta.int/eea/eea-agreement>" data-rt-link-type="external">EEA</a>) on September 14th, 2019. The new regulation aims to increase the security of online transactions by requiring additional customer authentication when the merchant and customer are both in the EEA. For example, customers might have to enter a one-time passcode sent to their phone number in order to complete a transaction. <br></p><p>As part of our compliance efforts, we’ve updated <a target="_blank" href="<https://university.webflow.com/article/connecting-to-a-payment-gateway>" data-rt-link-type="external">Stripe Payments</a> for Client Billing and Webflow Ecommerce to support <a target="_blank" href="<https://stripe.com/guides/3d-secure-2>" data-rt-link-type="external">3D Secure 2</a>, a new protocol that requests authentication from customers when needed. <br></p><p><strong>Who will be affected?</strong></p><p>The new SCA regulations will affect Webflow Ecommerce stores and Client Billing Accounts in the European Economic Area by requiring that customers or clients in the EEA to complete additional authorization ahead of a payment. <br></p><p><strong>How will Webflow Ecommerce transactions be affected?</strong></p><ul><li>The <a target="_blank" href="<https://stripe.com/guides/3d-secure-2>" data-rt-link-type="external">3D Secure 2</a> protocol will determine SCA authentication needs at the time of every transaction when both the Ecommerce business address and the customer are in the EEA.</li><li>If additional authorization is needed, the customer will be prompted in the checkout modal to provide it. <br></li></ul><p><strong>What do Ecommerce Store owners need to do?</strong></p><ul><li>To ensure their store is compliant, Ecommerce store owners should <a target="_blank" href="<https://university.webflow.com/article/publish-your-project>" data-rt-link-type="external">republish </a>their stores to activate <a target="_blank" href="<https://stripe.com/guides/3d-secure-2>" data-rt-link-type="external">3D Secure 2</a> payments for their customers. To <a target="_blank" href="<https://university.webflow.com/article/publish-your-project>" data-rt-link-type="external">republish</a>, open the <a target="_blank" href="<https://university.webflow.com/article/publish-your-project>" data-rt-link-type="external">Publish menu</a>, select the domain(s) you want to publish to and click “Publish to Selected Domains”.<br></li></ul><p><strong>How will Client Billing transactions be affected?</strong></p><ul><li>The <a target="_blank" href="<https://stripe.com/guides/3d-secure-2>" data-rt-link-type="external">3D Secure 2</a> protocol will determine SCA authentication needs at the time of every bill when both the Client Billing account holder and the client are in the EEA. An additional layer of authentication will be required for at least one of the EEA client’s recurring payments, but could be prompted for any of their recurring transactions.</li><li>If a recurring bill requires additional authentication, an email will be sent to a client with the proper authorization instructions to complete the payment. The client will have 7 days to authorize the payment.
