Google tag gateway: Now on Webflow

Google tag gateway: Now on Webflow

When you build on Webflow, you’re creating experiences designed to help your business stand out and grow. Underpinning those experiences with a strong measurement foundation can help you understand what’s driving results and make more informed marketing decisions.

Now, Webflow makes it easier to strengthen your measurement foundation. With Google tag gateway enabled behind the scenes, your conversion data can be routed through your own first-party website infrastructure, helping create richer, more resilient signals for your campaigns without the complexity of manual configuration.

Already using Webflow’s native Google tag integration? Simply republish your site to automatically activate Google tag gateway.

Why a Strong Measurement Foundation Matters

By bringing measurement onto your own first-party website infrastructure, you can:

  • Capture more complete conversion data: Routing data through your own infrastructure can create richer signals for your campaigns. Advertisers who adopted Google tag gateway on average observed conversions uplift of 14%.¹
  • Get more from your ad budget: Stronger conversion signals give Google’s AI-powered advertising tools more information to optimize against. Advertisers who build their data strength with Google tag gateway see up to 7% lower Cost per Acquisition.²
  • Build with added privacy: Tags deployed with Google tag gateway get confidential computing by default, providing added security and transparency on how personal data (PII) is collected and processed.

Path A: Setting Up a New Native Integration in Under Two Minutes

If you are setting up Google Ads measurement on a Webflow-hosted site for the first time and have no legacy custom-coded scripts, follow this quick, code-free workflow:

  1. Copy your Google tag ID
  2. Navigate to your Webflow Site Settings and click the Apps & Integrations tab.
  3. Under the Google tag section, click Settings, paste your tag ID, give it a descriptive name, and click Save changes.
  4. Click Publish to push changes live and activate Google tag gateway on Webflow.
  5. Go to Google tags -> Choose your tag -> Admin -> Google tag gateway to verify your status is listed as "Active"

Path B: Migrating Custom Code to the Native Integration

If you currently measure site performance using Google tag code snippets pasted into your custom header or footer settings, use this workflow to safely migrate to the native integration and prevent data discrepancies.

  1. In your Webflow Dashboard, open Site Settings → Custom Code. Copy your Google tag ID from your script and save a backup of the full snippet.
  2. Go to the Apps & Integrations tab. Scroll to the Google tag section, click Settings, paste your tag ID, give it a descriptive name, and click Save changes. (Note: You can add multiple IDs if you use both Google tag Manager and Google Ads).
  3. Return to Site Settings → Custom Code. Delete the legacy Google tag script snippets from both the <head> and <body> (noscript) sections, then click Save.
    1. Note: Event snippets, with names such as ‘Conversion’, ‘Purchase’, or ‘Form Submit’ should not be removed if you still use these snippets, e.g. for Conversion tracking in Google Ads. In such cases, only remove the code which contains the tag ID itself.
  4. Publish your changes to your .webflow.io staging domain to safely test your tracking before deploying it to your live site.
  5. Go to tagassistant.google.com, connect your staging URL, and verify that your tags are successfully firing.

Quick Tip: To maintain compliant consent management and accurate tracking, enable one of the two following configuration options:

  • Configure Advanced Consent Mode with global default denied settings. This ensures Google tags load safely and adjust their behavior dynamically as soon as the user grants consent.
  • Utilize Google Tag Manager container to centrally manage script firing priorities based on consent state, or tag templates provided by a Consent Management Platform.
